Real Madrid take on Manchester City for a place in the Champions League final, starting with the semi-final first leg on Tuesday (April 26).

Here, we look at some memorable two-legged meetings between the Spanish giants and English sides.

1967/68 Manchester United, lost 4-3

Real appeared on course for a ninth European Cup final with 20 minutes of the semi-final second leg remaining. After losing 1-0 at Old Trafford, the Spaniards had overturned the deficit to lead 3-2 before David Sadler levelled the tie. Centre-back Bill Foulkes then claimed the winner 10 minutes from time as United went on to beat Benfica at Wembley and record their first European Cup success.

1973/74 Ipswich, lost 0-1

Bobby Robson's battling Tractor Boys managed a famous UEFA Cup first-round victory in the only competitive matches between the two sides. An own goal by Real defender Benito Rubinan at Portman Road sent Town to the Bernabeu with a one-goal advantage and they successfully protected the lead to progress.

1975/76 Derby, won 6-5

After being thrashed 4-1 by manager Dave Mackay's men at the Baseball Ground, Real recovered in style to reach the third round of the European Cup. Charlie George scored four times for the English champions over the two legs, including a hat-trick in the first, but braces from Argentine Roberto Juan Martinez and Spanish striker Santillana, in addition to Pirri's penalty, gave Real a 5-1 second-leg victory after extra time and a 6-5 aggregate win.

2002/03 Manchester United, won 6-5

In the final days of David Beckham's United career, the midfielder came off the bench to score twice at Old Trafford against his future employers and earn a 4-3 win. Unfortunately for the then-England captain and his manager Sir Alex Ferguson, Brazilian striker Ronaldo had already scored a hat-trick for the Galacticos. The treble earned the legendary forward a standing ovation from the Red Devils' fans as the Champions League holders built on their 3-1 first-leg victory to progress to the quarter-finals.

2008/09 Liverpool, lost 0-5

Liverpool went into the Champions League last-16 second leg full of optimism after Yossi Benayoun's 82nd-minute winner in the Bernabeu but few would have predicted how easy they would find it at Anfield. Fernando Torres doubled the aggregate lead early on before Steven Gerrard's brace and a late Andrea Dossena goal sent below-par Madrid packing.
