Stoke made one change to the team that lost to Chelsea last weekend with Stephen Ireland coming in for Wilson Palacios whilst Newcastle welcomed Shola Ameobi, Steven Taylor, Paul Dummett and Tim Krul back to the starting line-up after their 4-0 loss to Manchester United last time out.

Peter Crouch was given a glorious opportunity to put Stoke in front within the first ten minutes when Marko Arnautovic’s pin point cross picked him out but he headed off the post.

Newcastle responded with their own chance as Ameobi fed Gosling but he fired well over from six-yards out.

The Magpies then had a penalty appeal waved away when Papiss Cisse was brought down by Geoff Cameron, before Arnautovic tried to set up Peter Odemwingie but he misjudged the ball and missed it completely.

The hosts took the lead just before half time when Erik Pieters put in a cross to the far post for Crouch but the ball was caught in the wind and looped over Krul to give the Dutch international his first ever Premier League goal.

Newcastle replied through Cheick Tiote who unleashed a 30-yard shot at Asmir Begovic but the Bosnian got down easily to save.

Arnautovic again tried to set up Crouch after beating his man on the left and finding the striker but again his efforts were in vain as his header is hit over the bar. The Austrian could have doubled Stoke’s lead a few minutes later when he ran in the box and was urged to shoot but he played the ball back to Crouch, only for it to roll behind him.

Charlie Adam then fired over from 30-yards out just minutes after he was subbed on for Stephen Ireland.

Newcastle tried to fight for a point in the closing stages through Vernon Anita who was played in by Ameobi but the Dutch International fired over from close range.
