Phillip Cocu will put aside his admiration for Atletico Madrid and coach Diego Simeone as PSV prepare to do battle with the Spaniards in the last 16 of the Champions League.

The Dutch league leaders have reached the knock-out stage of Europe's elite competition for the first time in nine years and will be underdogs against the 2014 runners-up.

Coach Cocu said on uefa.com: " Diego Simeone is bringing success back to Atletico. You can see his character as a player reflected on his team - I applaud that. They have a clear style of play.

"Would I settle for a 0-0 draw? Keeping a clean sheet could be very important.

"Atletico have a reliable side, team unity - they won't give anything away. They always play the same way - they are winners who play a compact game despite a busy fixture list.

"They are a nice example of everybody playing for each other and for the team. You have to be prepared and give your all every time."

PSV will be without influential striker Luuk de Jong through suspension but are expected to welcome back Andres Guardado from injury.

The Dutch side have won nine of their last 10 matches and Atletico defender Diego Godin is expecting a tough encounter.

He said: "We're treating this tie with the utmost seriousness and above all with respect for what they have achieved.

"PSV qualified from a very difficult group, they've made it to the last 16 for a reason. They have a young team and they try to impose their game with their fast young players.

"We know that in two-legged ties the first leg is pretty decisive as it defines how you will play the second leg and how you can achieve the right result.

"So we will be completely focused on that first leg. And then at home, with our fans behind us, we will play according to the result in the Netherlands."

Atletico midfielder Augusto Fernandez has recovered from a knee problem and is set to make his Champions League debut following his January move from Celta Vigo.
