Paulo Bento sacked by Portugal

Paulo Bento is no longer Portugal’s national manager, having been let go yesterday after this week’s surprising loss against Albania in the European Cup qualifiers.

His position had already been wobbling due to his side’s disappointing results in the World Cup, where they failed to survive the group stages, and the 1-0 home loss against Albania last Sunday sealed the former Sporting CP manager’s fate.

The 45-year-old had been on board since 2010, succeeding Carlos Queiroz, who left for Iran after the 2010 World Cup.

The Portuguese FA will be announcing Bento’s replacement early next week. On October 14th, the Portuguese Selecao plays Denmark, the chance for the new-comer to prove himself.
