Kenji Gorre hopes Northampton are handed an EFL Cup tie at Manchester United in Wednesday night's third-round draw after his decisive penalty in a shoot-out eliminated West Brom.

The Baggies were one of two top-flight teams to fall at the first hurdle, with Watford also exiting at the hands of Gillingham, despite both sides being ahead with 10 minutes remaining.

Alex Revell's equaliser for the Cobblers made it 2-2 and when Saido Berahino and James Morrison both missed from the spot, Gorre kept his cool to send Northampton through.

"I want Manchester United away," Gorre said afterwards. "I wasn't aware of Liverpool but to be among those names is class."

Watford will not be an option for Northampton, though, after Bradley Dack's extra-time penalty ensured Gillingham went through at their expense courtesy of a 2-1 success.

"Even though all players get tired in extra-time, perhaps they were mentally tired a bit," argued Hornets boss Walter Mazzarri. "We just need to work on our mentality when we go ahead."

The other seven top-flight sides all progressed in normal time, even though Chelsea were given a scare in a 3-2 success over Bristol Rovers and Hull had to come from behind to defeat Exeter 3-1.

Liverpool routed Burton 5-0 and Jurgen Klopp allayed any fears that Emre Can had suffered an ankle injury during the contest by insisting is was "not that serious".

His cross-city counterpart Ronald Koeman was also not fretting as Romelu Lukaku failed to find the night in Everton's 4-0 triumph over Yeovil at Goodison Park.

"I am not worried. That can happen for strikers," Koeman claimed.

Crystal Palace manager Alan Pardew was discussing a striker too after a 2-0 win over Blackpool, with £27million man Christian Benteke lasting 45 minutes on his debut.

"I want him to get to the level he was at prior to Liverpool," Pardew stated of the former Aston Villa forward.

Ex-England striker Peter Crouch scored a hat-trick as Stoke saw off Stevenage 4-0 while 2013 winners Swansea claimed a 3-1 win on the road at Peterborough.

Earlier on Tuesday evening it appeared as if struggling Blackburn would be subjected to an upset with Crewe 2-0 up at a virtually empty Ewood Park.

However, having forced extra time, Shane Duffy's eventful start to the season continued with an extra-time winner.

"When you need your players to stand up and be counted, that's exactly what happened," said Rovers boss Owen Coyle.

Derby came through a gruelling penalty shoot-out to beat Carlisle 14-13, while fellow Championship outfits Norwich, Brighton, Reading, Leeds, Nottingham Forest, QPR, Wolves, Bristol City, Newcastle and Preston all came through ties against lower-league opposition.
