Byrne sees off Shrimpers

Mark Byrne's late strike handed Newport a 1-0 over Southend at Rodney Parade.

The 25-year-old's 70th-minute winner came just moments after Exiles' goalkeeper Joe Day had pulled off an athletic penalty save to deny Mark Weston putting his side in-front.

The midfielders's first goal of the season left Phil Brown's men without a win in their last four league matches and sees them drop to tenth in League Two.

County leapfrogged the Shrimpers into seventh place after their run of three wins in their last five matches.

The Welsh outfit scrambled the ball off their own line twice in the first-half before Kevin Feely handled Jerome Williams' low cross from the left wing.

Day saved and sent his team back down the other end, where Aaron O'Connor's cushioned header allowed Byrne to fire into the bottom corner.
