Padraig Amond seals win for Newport

Newport claimed a 1-0 win over Cheltenham at a sodden Rodney Parade.

Heavy rain lashed the Exiles' new Desso surface, but it failed to stop an entertaining game with Padraig Amond's goal proving the difference.

Michael Flynn's Newport opened the scoring in the 35th minute when striker Amond found the back of the net after a deflected shot fell in his path.

In what was an end-to-end first half, both sides had opportunities to open the scoring with Cheltenham coming closest when Mohamed Eisa fired the ball over the crossbar after being one-on-one with home goalkeeper Joe Day.

With the rain having eased off in the second half, Cheltenham gained the upper hand and dominated possession while County looked to catch them on the break.

Cheltenham came close to equalising when Newport defender Ben Tozer was forced into clearing a Kyle Storer shot off the line.

Despite a late Cheltenham onslaught Flynn's side held firm to secure all three points.
