Scott Boden's goal secures Newport a vital victory over Carlisle

Newport secured back-to-back Sky Bet League Two wins for the first time since October thanks to a hard-fought 1-0 victory at home to 10-man Carlisle.

Scott Boden's simple tap-in at the back post in the 55th minute proved enough for County who continue to edge away from the relegation places.

A poor first half ended goalless as both sides lacked inspiration and quality. Carlisle used the long throw of Mark Ellis as their main attacking weapon but the alert Newport defenders, led by Darren Jones, cleared any danger.

The best chance of the half fell to Boden, but he scuffed the ball wide after being cleverly set up by Conor Wilkinson's flick-on.

Late in the half, Carlisle came close to breaking the deadlock but Ellis' bullet header flew over the crossbar following Macaulay Gillesphey's teasing free-kick.

Ten minutes after the interval, the home side found themselves in front. Boden made amends for his earlier miss after he bundled the ball in following Alex Rodman's low, drilled cross.

County were able to close out the game with no real danger from the visitors, who had Brandon Comley sent off for a second yellow card late on.
