Newcastle are close to signing Blackburn defender Grant Hanley for a reported fee of £5.5million.
Rovers boss Owen Coyle was keen to retain the Scotland international but Press Association Sport understands negotiations between the two Sky Bet Championship clubs have reached a satisfactory conclusion.
Hanley is set to travel north to Tyneside to complete a medical but that will not happen until Thursday at the earliest as the Magpies and their medical staff are travelling to Doncaster for a pre-season friendly on Wednesday night.
Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez let Fabricio Coloccini and Steven Taylor go following relegation from the Premier League and has been seeking reinforcements for Chancel Mbemba and Jamaal Lascelles.
Hanley, 24, would be the club's eighth summer signing.
