Tom Pope at the double as Port Vale defeat Morecambe

Tom Pope scored twice as Port Vale picked up a second successive win for Neil Aspin's rejuvenated side with a 3-0 success at Morecambe.

Pope's first came after 18 minutes following some shocking home defending.

Morecambe's Max Muller gave the ball away sloppily on the edge of his own area and Ben Whitfield took advantage of the mistake to whip in a cross from the left that was met by the head of Pope six yards out.

His second came after 67 minutes as he kept his cool to out-muscle the Morecambe defence and breeze past three weak challenges before stabbing the ball past Barry Roche from six yards out.

Pope then turned provider after 93 minutes when he crossed from the right hand side and Cristian Montano turned the ball past Roche from close range.

Morecambe's best efforts came when Adam McGurk tested Kelle Roos with a stinging 30 yard volley in the first half and Garry Thompson was denied superbly by the on-loan Derby keeper 20 minutes from time as he deflected a close range shot onto the crossbar to deny the home side a consolation.
