Shaun Williams goal earns Millwall victory

Millwall continued their impressive promotion push in Sky Bet League One as a solitary first half strike from Shaun Williams delivered a 1-0 win against Bury.

But the home side were made to work hard by the visitors who had chances to earn a point.

Bury were denied in the second minute when Jordan Archer somehow clawed out a Peter Clarke header from an inswinging Chris Hussey free-kick.

Four minutes later Fred Onyedinma ran on to George Saville's perfectly weighted through ball but he took too many touches and Bury goalkeeper Daniel Bachmann smothered the ball.

The Austria Under-21 international was called into action again seven minutes later and did well to block Lee Gregory's shot from Aiden O'Brien's pass.

However, he could do nothing about Lions captain Williams' fantastic strike from 25 yards that put the hosts ahead after 14 minutes.

Millwall looked to double their advantage and Saville came closest seven minutes before the break but his shot from 25 yards flew over the bar.

Nine minutes after half-time the Shakers looked to hit back when Danny Mayor nearly caught Archer off guard from out wide but his effort floated over the bar.

Three minutes after the hour the Lions hit Bury with a counter-attack, Gregory crossed the ball across goal from the right but O'Brien just could not reach it.

They nearly extended their lead four minutes later but Bachmann came out quickly to save from Gregory again in a one-on-one situation.

Millwall keeper Archer just about dealt with a rasping Danny Pugh half volley from 25 yards after 71 minutes.

The away side looked more threatening as the half progressed but Danny Rose narrowly failed to get on the end of Pugh's cross 12 minutes before the end.
