Anthony Martial's injury-time winner sent Manchester United into a record-equalling 19th FA Cup final with victory over Everton at Wembley was the beginning of the end for Martinez as the Toffee’s boss.
The Spaniard had gambled on FA Cup triumph instead of League form and has paid the price. Sacked on Friday 13th with the club in 12th place and just one win in last ten league games (now 11th after an end of season win over relegated Norwich) is nowhere near good enough with some of the talent at the club.
Everton will try and recruit a new manager with the offer of a club record transfer kitty. According to the Telegraph they have made Southampton's Dutch manager Ronald Koeman their number one target to replace sacked boss Roberto Martinez.
Frank de Boer, another Dutchman, could be an alternative after the 45-year-old quit as Ajax manager on Thursday. Many pundits and journalists have made unfavourable comparisons with his Wigan Athletic team, who won the FA Cup but also suffered in the Premier League and were relegated.
Martinez has done well as a manager in England, he was inspirational at Swansea as they climbed the ladder to the Premier League, he won the FA Cup with Wigan for the first time in the club's history and kept them continually punching above their weight. But it wasn’t to be at Everton after the fans turned on him and protested against his management.
