The attention grabbing headlines are likely as much about confidence in the brand and raising the United profile as the green light to trigger the £250million Euro release clause of Lionel Messi and make him and United the talking point of the new Premier League season.

The executives are not afraid to spend money to make Manchester United work as a global football brand with Ed Woodward saying that there is no spending top-limit.

“It’s difficult to deal in hypotheticals based on lots of different things,” Ed Woodward said. “The reality is that we’re not afraid of spending significant amounts of money in the transfer market.”

The Independent are reporting that another marquee signing could be on his way to Old Trafford this summer. That player is Arturo Vidal and is reported to now be subject to a £39m bid for his services. Vidal has won the Serie A title every season since joining the champions in 2011.

Manchester United are currently on a pre-season tour of the US, thrashing LA Galaxy 7-0 as part of their warm-up preparations. The 27-year-old is thought to be among Luis van Gaal’s main targets with di Maria being another possibility.

The Independent follows reports in Italian newspaper Tuttosport which revealed that a final bid has been made for the Chile international who currently plays for Serie A champions Juventus.
