Reports this morning reveal that Manchester United have been 'ordered' to make a £30million bid for the Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane in order to beat Arsenal and Chelsea to the chase.

The report in the Express highlights the fact that Varane who was brought in to be the long-term replacement of Sergio Ramos is still a second fiddle player and as such may well be open to joining a club that will provide greater opportunity as a starter.

Real Madrid, however they see the player as a player for the future are likely to have their resolve tested says the report and may well decide to cash in.

Varane however hit out at suggestions he was a Real Madrid wantaway, stating he was happy to fight for his place in the team: "That is a lie, I always say the same thing.

"Competition is important for the team to improve. I like the competition and anything else is lies.

"It is from a translation that was not good."

United have had their much debated defensive weaknesses tested all season and Van Gaal has been linked with a number of defensive players such as Mats Hummels with the report suggesting that Varane may well have become top of the Red Devils wish-list for Summer reinforcements.
