Liverpool's pursuit of Serie A star takes another turn

It seems that the saga surrounding the transfer of Mateo Kovacic is set to roll on with Liverpool refusing to entertain the valuation of the player presented by Inter Milan according to a report in the Daily Star.

The newspaper reports that despite the two clubs having had a prolonged discussion over the player that the discussions have ended without resolution.

The 21-year-old has been a long-term target for the Reds but with the club refusing to go beyond £15million and with Inter valuing their player at £21.3m their remains a significant gulf in expectations.

The Croatian midfielder was a bright spot in an otherwise disappointing season for Roberto Mancini’s charges with the club finishing well outside of European qualification in eighth place. Kovacic himself made 35 appearances (2466 minutes), producing five goals and three assists for his club.

Whilst the deal may look as if it has derailed the Italian journalist, Gianluca Di Marzio has claimed just yesterday that the deal may still have some life in it despite the brinkmanship on both sides having resulted in stalemate.

Despite what could be a disappointing end to their summer pursuit of Kovacic, Liverpool have done brisk business so-far with the capture of a number of players including Roberto Firmino of Hoffenheim for a sizeable £29 million and what sounds like a good bid for the right-back Nathaniel Clyne.
