Liverpool to revive William Carvalho interest in summer transfer?

Reports this morning from the Metro suggest that Liverpool are keeping tabs on the progress of Sporting Lisbon star William Carvalho with a view to bring the player to Anfield in the summer.

Liverpool were strongly tipped in January to trigger the players release clause with Reds scouts reportedly being present for a match with Carvalho the subject of enquiry. The transfer failed to materialise in January but the report suggests it is back on course for the summer.

The 22-year-old Portuguese defensive midfielder has been with Sporting since 2011 but has only made 51 league appearances due to being put out on loan to Brugge and Fatima.

Carvalho was eligible for both Angola and Portugal but chose to play for Portugal where he has earned 11 caps since 2013. The player has been of interest to Liverpool and Arsenal for some time but the sticking point has always been the release clause of £37.5million.

A bid by Arsenal of £13million plus a player in the form of Joel Campbell was rejected and with difficulties in his third-party ownership putting off potential buyers the Portuguese club purchased the full rights to the player in November last year.
