Chesterfield keeper Tommy Lee successfully saw off the challenge of a trio of Rochdale stars to put his name on the PFA Fans’ Player of the Year trophy for League Two.
Keeper Tommy was a junior player with Manchester United and helped the club’s reserve team win the ‘quadruple’ in 2005 before moving on to pastures new, but not so far away, with Macclesfield.
After a brief loan spell with Rochdale, he joined Chesterfield in 2008 and has been a firm fans’ favourite; being voted the club’s player of the year two seasons running.
This season he has played a key role in helping Chesterfield win promotion to League One, with Dale’s Michael Rose, Ian Henderson and Scott Hogan pushing him all the way.
Fleetwood’s Antoni Sarcevic, who helped his club win promotion via the play-offs, and Sam Winnall of Scunthorpe were also in the frame, but it was a case of ‘rock on Tommy’ as Lee claimed the fans’ prize. Tommy was again named in the League Two PFA Team of the Year, on the same day he kept a clean sheet against Burton Albion to take the Spireites back to League One.
There is no bigger admirer of Lee than his manager Paul Cook who has virtually run out of superlatives to describe his number one’s contribution this season.
After another inspirational display against Bristol Rovers towards the end of the season, Cook went on record as saying: “I could sit here and praise Tommy Lee but I would be here all night. He's a top goalie and top goalies make good saves.
"When you are building a team and looking to go forward you have a chance if you have a top keeper. And we certainly have one in Tommy.”
