Kagawa plus Cash Could Bring Hummels to Manchester United

German and Borussia Dortmund centre-back Mats Hummels could make a switch to Manchester United this summer, according to widespread reports.

Many Twitter sources have speculated that Borussia Dortmund would consider an offer of Kagawa plus cash to let their highly-rated centre leave the club, despite the German club looking to secure senior members of the squad following the departure of Robert Lewandowski to Bayern Munich.

Recently, conjecture has intensified as The Guardian stated that Hummels has told friends that he would be open to the idea of a move to Manchester United. However, the 25-year-old spoke about the possibility of a transfer during the world cup and stated, “I never think about that (transfers) or talk about it because it is something that isn’t important for me right now.”

If the rumoured offer were to go through, it would see Shinji Kagawa return to Dortmund after he left the pastures of the Bundesliga for Old Trafford back in 2012. However, the attacking midfielder has struggled to cement a starting position in Manchester; competing against Mata, Rooney and now summer acquisition Ander Herrera for the ‘number 10 ‘ role in the side.

Manchester United value the Japanese international at around £15 million; the price they bought him for two years ago. And with Hummels valued at around £25 million, the bid of Kagawa with an additional £10 million in cash could see a fee agreed.

The van Gaal regime has already seen Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera sign for the Red Devils, yet the signing of Hummels could be pivotal to Manchester United’s success next season. After losing Ferdinand, Vidic and imminently Patrice Evra, the United defence needs proven class to make a challenge for the top four next season, and Hummels could fulfil this requirement.

With Di Maria and Vidal other speculated signings for Manchester United this transfer window, it seems United are getting their mojo back.
