Jermain Defoe would consider strutting his stuff on Strictly Come Dancing

Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe would consider swapping the trials of a Premier League survival fight for the challenge offered by hit television programme Strictly Come Dancing.

The England international, 34, is currently trying to help David Moyes' Black Cats avoid relegation, which looks an increasingly likely prospect given they are 10 points from safety with eight games left.

Defoe could leave the Stadium of Light following demotion to the Sky Bet Championship and when asked by ITV's Lorraine lifestyle show if he could see himself entering a dance contest in the autumn, he appeared keen.

He said on Thursday: "I did an interview not too long ago and they asked me the question and I was like: 'yeah why not!'

"I've always enjoyed dancing, I come from a West Indian background so you never know. So if they want me, give me a call."

Peter Schmeichel, Robbie Savage and John Barnes are among the footballers to have already tried their luck on the Saturday night BBC show, with mixed success.

Defoe has also struck up a close friendship with terminally-ill Bradley Lowery, the young Sunderland fan who has appeared as a mascot at games this season.

Recalling his first meeting with the five-year-old, who has a rare form of cancer, Defoe said: "He was buzzing round the changing rooms and when he saw me he just ran over to me, just jumped on my lap. I mean from that instant moment the bond started there and he is an amazing child.

"People talk about obviously what I bring to his life but I can honestly say he has changed me as a person you know, going to visit him in hospital."

On the youngster's current condition, Defoe added: "We saw him last week, me and my girlfriend, and to be honest he wasn't too well and he hasn't really been eating which is a worry but I mean apart from that, like you said, he's a fighter.

"He's fighting every day. We took him some toys and some sweets, which was nice, but day by day hopefully he'll get better, you know, all you can do is pray."
