It's not 19th century football when Chelsea do it; instead it's 'Strategic' football - Mourinho

Jose Mourinho has often bemoaned the lack of ambition shown by Chelsea’s opponents especially when they visit Stamford Bridge. According to him, the defensive attitude makes it difficult for his team to penetrate and thus beat the opponent. At one point Jose went on to call West Ham’s performance 19th Century Football and said it was bad for the game.

It then comes as a bit of a surprise when Mr Mourinho calls a 19th Century-like display from his team strategic football. The Blues only managed 21% possession and a single shot on target for the entirety of the match. Only two chances were created with very few forward runs. The lack of ambition was especially surprising as Manchester United were reeling from defensive injuries so surely the highest scoring team in the league would be expected to fancy their chances. Furthermore, Chelsea did not really need to win the game and an entertaining display at home would have been a fitting swansong with the title all but secured.

Sadly, it isn't the first time as Jose Mourinho employs the conservative tactic whenever he is faced by an even slightly difficult opponent. Usually he has an excuse for it, like the strikers were injured or the other team is stronger. It would be nice for him to call it as it is next time and not try to create the aura of some complex tactic. It is as he once put : 19th Century Football.
