Is Balotelli destined for a bit part bench role at Liverpool?

Brendan Rodgers has told Mario Balotelli that he must get used to the bench for the betterment of the team. Balotelli, who was available to play against Burnley after an absence through injury, was an unused substitute. This is rather telling as to how he figures into Brendan Rodgers’ plans. He suggests that Balotelli does not suit the Liverpool playing style that he is trying to employ, which is one of aggressiveness both on and off the ball.

Rodgers states, “If the team is going to need him from the bench then it’s something he would have to become adjusted to. It’s the same for every single player, not just him. When called upon, whether it’s to start a game or come off the bench, you ask your players to be ready.”

On Balotelli’s style of play he adds,“Working with him for the time he’s been here we have seen he’s probably someone who’s better in and around the box.

“That level of intensity and pressing isn't part of his game.”

This news comes at the same time as Neil Ashton has criticized Balotelli’s attitude in terms of how he fits, or rather does not, the Liverpool style of play. Balotelli does not press the ball when the opposition is in possession and rarely looks a threat, nonetheless useful in any way, outside of his opponent’s penalty box. Ashton even suggests that a move may be the best possible route for both parties to take in the January transfer window.

The former Norwich City and West Ham United striker spoke on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show.

“His attitude has been wrong and with the way Brendan Rodgers has talked about how he fits into their style of play, it just doesn't sound like it’s fitting right and it wouldn't surprise me if something happens in January with him going out and maybe somebody coming in, perhaps as a swap deal.” He said.

Whether a move as early as January remains unclear, something that is certain is that things have not quite worked out for Mario Balotelli and Liverpool. It would be difficult to suggest that his playing style will provide him a regular place in future Liverpool sides any time soon. For that to happen either he himself or the club would have to change their ideologies completely.
