Howe hoping methods pay off

Eddie Howe hopes that by retaining their tried-and-tested philosophy Bournemouth will be able to compete with the financial might of more established Barclays Premier League clubs.

The Cherries enter uncharted territory on Saturday week when they launch their first season in the top flight against Aston Villa at the Vitality Stadium and have been installed as third favourites for an instant return to the Championship.

Howe believes they will prosper by keeping faith with the principles that have underpinned their fairytale ascent into the Premier League.

"We certainly don't compete in terms of finances, it's about the same principles we've always worked towards, money doesn't really come into it," the Bournemouth manager said.

"It's about having the right culture, a high work ethic and the desire to improve, both within the players and staff. Mix into that our style of play, and we like to think that will be enough for us.

"It's not rocket science, we won't be able to compete (in the transfer market) with the top clubs, but when you put 11 players on the pitch, it's not about money, it's about footballers trying to play the game.

"We hope that we can be competitive and at the moment the players are showing all the signs that they can be.

"Good luck to any club that can spend £50million on one player. If we had that money, we'd like to spend it. You want to get the best for your club."

The club-record £8million signing of Ipswich full-back Tyrone Mings has been the pick of Bournemouth's seven new arrivals this summer and Howe hopes to do more business in the transfer window.

"We'd still like to add more to the squad and in our mind we're not done with transfers. That's taking up our time behind the scenes," he said.

"But it's important that we get the right players in and not just add numbers for the sake of it. That's a difficult challenge and a difficult balance.

"We're aware of what we want. We want to get the right players for the right price and that's a never-ending battle.

Eddie Howe was speaking at the launch of Vitality Stadium, AFC Bournemouth's newly named home ground. Vitality, the health and life insurance that rewards healthy living, is the Official Wellness Partner of AFC Bournemouth.
