How other English footballers have fared in Italy

Manchester City's Joe Hart will be the first English goalkeeper to play in Serie A after completing a loan move to Torino.

The 29-year-old had fallen out of favour at City after Pep Guardiola's arrival at the Etihad Stadium, and the signing of Claudio Bravo from Barcelona last week sealed Hart's fate.

Here Press Association Sport looks at how a number of former England internationals have fared in Italy.

David Platt

Platt's three-year spell at Aston Villa earned him a switch to Bari for £5.5million in 1991. He was an outstanding performer despite the team's relegation to Serie B and moved on to Juventus a year later for £6.5million. Platt lasted one campaign in Turin before moving to Sampdoria for two seasons where he again proved a goalscoring success from midfield. He moved back to England in 1995, joining Arsenal.

Paul Gascoigne

One of England's most naturally gifted players moved to Lazio from Tottenham in 1992, a year later than scheduled, after suffering a serious knee injury in the 1991 FA Cup final. He swiftly became a fans' favourite. 'Gazza' showed glimpses of his brilliance during his time in Rome but struggled with injuries and failed to win silverware in his three seasons at the club.

Des Walker

In a time when Italian football was known for its water-tight defences, Walker's arrival at Sampdoria from Nottingham Forest in 1992 showed how highly he was rated overseas as well as at home. He started 30 matches but was played mainly out of position in a full-back role before signing for Sheffield Wednesday after just one season.

Paul Ince

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson sold his 'Guv'nor' to Inter Milan in 1995 and Ince quickly established himself as a fans' favourite at San Siro. The midfielder's commanding performances and impressive record of 10 goals in 54 appearances in two years saw club president Massimo Moratti offer Ince an improved, long-term deal to stay in Italy. However Ince returned to England with his young family, joining Liverpool in 1997.

Tony Dorigo

The Australian-born defender had successful spells at Aston Villa, Chelsea and Leeds, also winning 15 caps for England. He signed for Serie B side Torino in 1997, helping the team to the promotion play-off final against Perugia, but was the only player to miss in a shoot-out. Dorigo won player of the year in his only season at the club before joining Derby.

Ashley Cole

Following successful spells at Arsenal and Chelsea, the left-back joined Roma on a two-year deal after his contract at Stamford Bridge expired. Cole made 16 appearances in his only season before his contract was terminated by mutual consent.
