President Florentino Perez hailed a very important day for Real Madrid after plans to transform the Bernabeu into an "avant-garde architectural icon" were given the green light during a meeting with the Madrid City Council.

The meeting took place inside the press room at the city's Palacio de Cibeles and was attended by Madrid mayor Manuela Carmena as well as a broad representation of the Real board among other delegates and council officials.

The 32-times LaLiga winners' plans include reformation of the stadium as well as making an improvement to the urban environment.

Perez told his club's official website www.realmadrid.com: "Today is very important for Real Madrid, for its fans, for its partners and for our city. It is a happy day for everyone because we found from that consensus and that agreement, which will be a dramatic transformation in the Santiago Bernabeu.

"Our club is about indestructible values. With this agreement we will start a process of modernization and transformation that will become an avant-garde architectural icon. This stadium will act as a economic and touristic invigorator and will contribute to strengthening the image of our city."

While the capacity will remain roughly the same, the main changes at the Bernabeu will be seen in the enhanced VIP areas and in the form of a retractable roof, it has been reported.

"This plan will also be an improvement for the whole environment of the stadium. The neighbours will be able to enjoy a more sustainable environment remodelled," Perez added.

"During these 114 years of history we wanted to be at the height of Madrid. From today we are facing a new challenge. We will have the best stadium and will do for Real Madrid, its fans and this city."
