Own goal lifts Coventry past Fleetwood

Richard Wood's own goal was enough to ensure a defeat for new Fleetwood manager Steven Pressley, with his side beaten 1-0 by former club Coventry.

Both sides struggled to create meaningful chances in the first half, Coventry's Jacob Murphy going closest to breaking the deadlock.

His attempt to sweep the ball home at the back post, after Sam Ricketts and Ruban Lameiras combined well down the right, was thwarted by Chris Maxwell, the goalkeeper's fingertip sending the ball spinning along the line.

Ash Hunter made his mark for Fleetwood in the midweek win over Shrewsbury and went about more of the same after the break, twice testing Reice Charles-Cook in the Coventry goal.

The first, a long-range effort from wide on the left, was deflected wide. The second, a close-range shot following a tenacious Antoni Sarcevic move, was tipped on to the post.

Both sides had chances to snatch it, Murphy testing Maxwell and then smashing the woodwork at one end, David Ball forcing another sharp save from Charles-Cook at the other.

And it was the Sky Blues who came up trumps in the last minute of normal time.

With Fleetwood flagging, George Thomas found space on the edge of the box. Maxwell saved his effort but the ball rebounded off one-time Coventry defender Wood and into the net.
