Five Things for Manchester United fans to look forward to next season

21 June 2013 09:23

Last season Manchester United re-claimed their Premier League crown from rivals, Manchester City.

Sir Alex Ferguson's men finished 11 points above City in the race for the title, and in doing so won their 20th league title, their 13th under the Scot.

Looking ahead to next season, Manchester United fans may cast a shadow of doubt over life under Moyes - who has the impossible task of taking over from the greatest manager of all time.

Fear not, as there is still plenty of things to look forward to next season for Manchester United fans all across the world.

1. A new challenge under David Moyes

Sir Alex Ferguson wrote his name in the United folklore many, many years ago for his fantastic service and success. It was this continued success for an astonishing 27 years that really marked his legendary status.

However, life under Sir Alex Ferguson is now over, with David Moyes set to officially take over the club on July 1st.

One bonus Moyes has is that he has no bigger fan routing for him, backing him 100% of the way.

In an emotional farewell speech at the end of last season, the retiring 71-year-old urged the club’s supporters to get behind the new man, just as they backed him during a difficult period at the start of his 27-year reign.

‘I would like to remind you this club stood by me in bad times, the players and the staff,’ he said.

‘Your job now is to stand by the new manager.’

Life under David Moyes will be a roller coaster ride for sure, but it's one this author, along with many, is looking forward to.

2. A Fit Nemanja Vidic

Nemanja Vidic endured 14 months of injury hell after suffering cruciate ligament damage to his left knee in December 2011. That kept the Serbian out for the rest of that season, whilst a further knee op kept him out for parts of last campaign.

However, after eventually racking up 23 appearances last season – the return of Nemanja Vidic looks a promising possibilty.

The Manchester United captain is one of the strongest, most brutal defenders in the Premier League. His leadership skills and sheer power were missed through parts of the season.

His full return can not come quick enough for the Red Devils.

3. Summer Transfer Window

I recently wrote a piece breaking down Manchester United's Top Potential Summer Transfer Targets.

Manchester United continue to be linked with the world's brightest talent, and this summer is no different. The club has been named a possible destination for a plethora of the planet's brightest youngsters, and with £60million reportedly available, it's sure to be a busy summer at Old Trafford.

The likes of Thiago, Cesc Fabregas and Kevin Strootman are just a few of the names being lined up with the Old Trafford 'Welcome' door, with Moyes and United seemingly keen on a midfield makeover.

4. Champions League

It's been tough watching Manchester United in Europe for the last two years.

Manchester United enter the Champions League every year with their eye on winning it. Sure, the likes of Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Real Madrid are normally the favourites, and rightfully so.

However three finals in four years for United gave them the opportunity to begin an era of dominance of European football. A victory over Chelsea in 08/09 was unfortunately followed up by two defeats to Barcelona.

Two very convincing defeats.

Very rarely are Manchester United so irrevocably outplayed in Europe – let alone twice.

Partner this with the loss of Cristiando Ronaldo – and Manchester United have seemingly failed to stamp their authority on the most illustrious competition in club football since then.

However, as another season beckons, so does the dream of lifting the holy grail that is the UEFA Champions League. A new season represent's a new chance for Manchester United, who will still feel a sense of injustice after the tie against Real Madrid last season.

5. Early Fixture List

Like most Premier League fans, I couldn't wait for the fixture list to be announced on Wednesday.

Like most Manchester United fans, at first look our opening five fixtures were welcomed with an elongated 'ohhhhhhhhhh.'

Swansea (away), Chelsea (home), Liverpool (away), Crystal Palace (home), Man City (away).

For Moyes, these five fixtures simply could not represent a bigger opportunity to earn the respect of his news fans, players and the club.

If Manchester United can gather 10/12 points from the aforementioned fixtures then they'll be in a fantastic position to defend their Premier League crown.

Whatever happens this season, it'll be one to remember for Manchester United fans. A season of transition is among us, and life under Moyes finally begins.
