Ferriby earn dramatic Wembley win

Underdogs North Ferriby United fought back from two goals down to draw 3-3 with Wrexham before beating the Welsh side on penalties in a dramatic FA Trophy final at Wembley.

Wrexham had been on course to lift the trophy for a second time in three years when goals from Louis Moult and Jay Harris put the Conference Premier side 2-0 up, but Ferriby struck twice in the final 14 minutes through Liam King and substitute Ryan Kendall to send the match to extra time.

Kendall then headed United in front only for Wrexham to fight back themselves and make it 3-3 two minutes from the final whistle when top scorer Moult smashed home his 20th goal of the season.

That sent the final to penalties, where three saves from goalkeeper Adam Nicklin helped United, from an East Yorkshire village with a population of just 4,000, come out on top 5-4 to claim the b iggest triumph in their history.

It took favourites Wrexham just 11 minutes to take the lead when Joe Clarke and Connor Jennings combined well to set up Moult, who slotted home from seven yards out.

Red Dragons keeper Andy Coughlin denied Danny Clarke and the ever-dangerous Jason St Juste in one-on-ones either side of half-time as United, who ply their trade a level below Wrexham in the Conference North, battled to get back on terms in front of a crowd of 14,585.

The Villagers had a let-off when Jennings, having rounded Nicklin, saw his shot cleared off the line by Danny Hone, but they were not so fortunate in the 59th minute when Harris - a survivor from the Wrexham side that beat Grimsby on penalties in the 2013 final - coolly made it 2-0.

That looked to be it for Ferriby, but they shocked Wrexham by netting twice in the final 15 minutes to level up the scores.

Captain King reduced the deficit when he fired an unstoppable penalty into the top corner after Coughlin had brought down Clarke - the keeper escaping with only a yellow card - and then Kendall turned home St Juste's low cross to earn United an 87th-minute equaliser.

The momentum stayed with United at the start of the extra period and, after St Juste had seen another good opening saved by Coughlin, Kendall climbed above his marker to glance home a deflected St Juste cross and put his side 3-2 in front.

Victory was almost within Ferriby's grasp, but there was another late twist as Moult smashed home a brilliant half-volley two minutes from the final whistle to make it 3-3 and send the final to penalties.

It was Nicklin who took the plaudits in the shoot-out as he saved from Jennings and Neil Ashton before making the decisive stop to deny Steve Tomassen - whose effort came after Nathan Peat had put United 5-4 ahead in sudden death - and spark wild celebrations from the East Yorkshire side.
