City leave Chairboys standing

Wycombe saw their 10-match unbeaten run in League Two ended by Exeter, who were 2-1 winners at St James' Park.

Wanderers, who were unbeaten away from home this season, capitalised on an awful start to the game by their hosts and took the lead after seven minutes. Peter Murphy ghosted between the central defenders and planted a header firmly into the corner of the net to give goalkeeper Christy Pym no chance.

David Wheeler, a winger turned into a makeshift striker by Exeter manager Paul Tisdale, was causing Wycombe problems and it was from his persistence that City drew level after 26 minutes.

His pass sent strike partner Graham Cummins clear and while Matt Ingram saved his shot, Wheeler had continued his run to net the rebound from 12 yards.

Scot Bennett restored Exeter's lead on the hour mark when he followed up to score after Cummins had been denied by Ingram's flying save.

The Chairboys had enough chances to draw level but Paul Hayes and Matt Bloomfield were way off target, while Exeter should have killed the game late on but Jimmy Keohane headed high after being picked out by Matt Grimes.
