Fifers progress on penalties

East Fife beat Dumbarton 4-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw after extra-time in the first round of the Scottish League Cup at the Bayview Stadium.

The first half was an evenly-matched contest with Nathan Austin firing wide for the hosts after 20 minutes, while home goalkeeper Ryan Goodfellow saved efforts from Jamie Lindsay and Garry Fleming as the Championship side tried to break the deadlock.

Gary Naysmith's League Two side came out with a renewed energy after the break, though, and went ahead two minutes in as midfielder Austin picked up a long ball forward and slotted past Dumbarton stopper Mark Brown and into the bottom corner.

Steven Craig made his debut for the visitors on the hour mark and Kevin Cawley headed home their equaliser five minutes later after Goodfellow saved from Calum Waters.

The hosts dominated the opening period of extra-time, while Cawley had a goal disallowed following a foul on Goodfellow as the away side searched for a winner.

When it came to the spot-kicks, debutant Craig, Willie Gibson and Cawley missed for Dumbarton as the League Two hosts reached the second round.
