George Thomas nets winner for Coventry

George Thomas scored as Coventry earned local bragging rights with a 1-0 win over 10-man Walsall.

The young striker, who earlier in the month scored as Coventry won the Checkatrade Trophy at Wembley, netted seven minutes before the interval to bring a welcome win for Mark Robins' side.

Coventry, who have been bottom since January and in the relegation zone from November, had already been condemned to relegation, and with Walsall safe in mid-table there was precious little to play for bar pride.

Walsall should have taken the lead in the 32nd minute when Matt Preston headed wide from inside the area, and he was made to pay when Thomas stroked the ball home from the edge of a crowded penalty area.

Gael Bigirimana headed off the line from Eoghan O'Connell 11 minutes into the second half, while the home side survived strong claims for a penalty when the ball hit the hand of Jordan Willis.

O'Connell was sent off for a second yellow with 20 minutes remaining.
