Cheikhou Kouyate sets sights on Wembley

Cheikhou Kouyate is targeting Wembley in the EFL Cup final after revelling in the atmosphere of the London derby win over Chelsea.

Kouyate rose ahead of restored Chelsea captain John Terry to head the Hammers in front and Edimilson Fernandes struck a second three minutes after the interval.

Gary Cahill replied with virtually the last kick of the game to make it 2-1, but by then attention had switched to the stands, with trouble breaking out between rival supporters behind the goal being defended by the Hammers, who play at Manchester United in the quarter-finals.

After a third successive win, Kouyate said: "Last season we wanted to reach Wembley so why can't we do it this season?

"There is still some way to go yet but we will see."

Slaven Bilic's men have now won five of the nine competitive fixtures at the former Olympic Stadium, which has been derided as a footballing venue and is under renewed scrutiny following the violence.

Defender Kouyate praised the atmosphere, which turned sour late on to prompt a Football Association investigation.

"The atmosphere was very good but that was because we won and the team played well," Kouyate added.

"We missed the atmosphere at Upton Park but against Chelsea, we had it again and it was very good.

"Now we need that kind of atmosphere in every game and not just the big matches.

"If we have that, maybe the players can give even more."

The Hammers are unbeaten in October after a draw with Middlesbrough and Premier League wins at Crystal Palace and home to Sunderland. Their final fixture of the month is at Everton on Sunday.

"I cross my fingers that we can produce another victory like we did last season," said Kouyate, referring to March's 3-2 win at Goodison Park.

"This is another big game and it will be great for the team if we can get another victory.

"Everton have a good team and it will not be easy for us."

Chelsea next play at Southampton in the Premier League, one of two remaining competitions for the Blues, alongside the FA Cup.

Chelsea head coach Antonio Conte rotated his options for the EFL Cup, making seven changes to the side which began last Sunday's 4-0 defeat of Jose Mourinho's Manchester United.

Conte said on Chelsea TV: "I'm pleased for the young players and the players in this period who have played less. (But) it's a pity because now we are out of this competition."

Chelsea had won three in a row, scoring nine times without conceding, until the Hammers ended the run.

Now Conte wants a response against Saints.

He added: "We must prepare in the right way for the game against Southampton. It's important to continue to work in the right spirit."
