Cambridge United walk the League 2 tightrope with late equaliser

Cambridge United pulled another late goal to draw level in extra time for the second week running as they took on local rivals Stevenage Borough at the R Costings Abbey Stadium.

Stevenage took an early lead with a Dean Wells goal from a Dave Martin cross in the sixteenth minute in a game of high attrition which saw Stevenage collect five yellow cards throughout the game.

Possession was fairly equal throughout the match with the final stats showing a 52% / 48% split with Cambridge taking advantage.

United boss Richard Money would try to change things around with three substitutions as Robbie Simpson replaced Jordan Slew, Greg Taylor came on for Liam Hughes and on-load striker Johnny Margetts replaced Nathaniel Mendez-Laing.

Despite these changes it was looking like play-off challengers Stevenage had done enough to take the full three points until Simpson struck a cruel blow to the visiting team knocking home a close range shot from a long throw in the fifth minute of extra time, echoing the performance of Sullay Kaikai last week when he equalised against Shrewsbury Town in the 95th minute.

Speaking after the match to BBC Radio Cambridgeshire Richard Tait said "We managed to stay in the game again and I think the lads kept believing until the end. It just proves in the last two games that we always know we can get back in the game. We just need half a chance and luckily Simmo has put it in the back of the net.

"First half we played quite well and obviously gave away the goal which was disappointing. Second half we didn't play as well but kept going, but it was never say die and we managed to pull off another late one."

Cambridge face Tranmere Rovers tomorrow night at the Abbey Stadium and will be looking to cash in on their recent bad form, Tait added ""If we win the game tomorrow, it makes this an even bigger point but Tranmere are fighting for their lives so it will be a really difficult game."
