Cambridge United development squad suffer 4-2 defeat to Posh

It isn't just the first team squad at Cambridge United who seem to be going through a bad run of form at the moment, following on from the League 2 3-0 defeat on Tuesday night to York, the development team faced Peterborough United at Nene Park.

The line-up for the match contained first team regulars including Harrison Dunk, Gearoid Morrissey, Matteo Lanzoni, John Hunt, Jordan Chiedozie and Dominic Ball and things were looking to go well as James Akintunde put away an early goal.

Sullay Kaikai knocked home another in the second half, but it would be all downhill from that point as Posh hit home three goals in eight minutes before a final goal sealed the fate of the 4-2 loss.

Cambridge United assistant coach Alan Neilson was understandably disappointed with the outcome despite admitting that the team played well in the first half.

"At 2-0 up, we were totally on top, but then we conceded on 55, 58 and 63 which put us 3-2 down and then we were pushing to get an equaliser, but they scored the fourth goal in the 84th minute." said Neilson to Cambridge Evening News.

"I just said to the lads afterwards the common goal of a team is to win football matches and when you're 2-0 up you've got to work hard to protect what you've got and at 2-1, you've got to work even harder than that. If one goes in you close ranks and get nice and tight and weather the storm."

Neilson said as it is a development game they can use it to learn from their mistakes, but admitted "They need to learn as a team to be more solid. We can't leak goals how we did after being in a position of real strength and dominating the game."

Despite the defeat the was some positives to come out of the match with Ryan Horne making a comeback after starting on the bench, the youngster has been out since last summer with a serious leg infection.

"He has been training for the last three weeks, but I'm pleased to see him get a few minutes and hopefully he'll get a few more because we've got quite a lot of games coming up."
