Britt Assombalonga: PFA Fans' Player of the Month for the Championship

Britt Assombalonga is already being hailed as Nottingham Forest’s 'smiling assassin' after a goal-laden start to his City Ground career.

And the former Peterborough United striker, a 5million summer signing, has even more reason to smile today as he is named the PFA Fans' Player of the Month.

Assombalonga was tipped to be named in the England Under 21 squad this week, but even though he has missed out on this occasion, it is only a matter of time before international honours come his way.

Posh’s leading scorer last season has taken the leap from League One to the Championship in his impressive stride, and has helped Forest become one of the early season favourites to win promotion.

Assombalonga has paid tribute to his Forest teammates, and says: “It has been hard making the step up to the Championship, but when you have good players around you, it makes things so much easier.”

Eight goals in his first nine games made him an instant with the Forest faithful, and the £5m the club invested in the summer is looking like a drop in the Trent!

Forest No.2 Steve Wigley reckons that he and Pearce never had any doubts that Assombalonga would justify his price tag, and the pair are naturally delighted with his contribution so far.

"We knew we were getting goals when we signed him,” says Wigley. “We knew we would get that from him. Players who score goals can be the difference between winning games and losing them.

"We are pleased with him all around. He compliments a good group of players. We found a way of winning, when we were not at our best, which is the sign of a good side.”

Also in the hunt for our monthly award were fellow goal-getters Lewis Grabban and Cameron Jerome (both Norwich), along with David McGoldrick (Ipswich) and Jordan Rhodes (Blackburn).
