Arsenal to launch improved bid for Dortmund star Ilkay Gundogan

Wenger has been linked with signing the Dortmund player since January with the midfielder being the subject of an unsuccessful £18.4m bid. Wenger seems undeterred and reports from Kicker states that Arsenal will return with a new bid in the summer.

The 24-year-old German has not long returned to full fitness after 18 months of problems although this has not helped Dortmund particularly as they were defeated 3-1 by Borussia Monchengladbach at the weekend. Gundogan has turned down the offer to renew his £100,000-per-week contract that expires next year, leaving his options open for a move to pastures new in the summer.

Gundogen is an unquestionable gifted player, athletic and powerful, a player that could bring positive attributes to a Premier League club and at a surprisingly modest price compared to the other player likely to move on from Dortmund in the Summer, Mats Hummels, with a price-tag of around £36million.

The £15-19million-rated anchorman occupies an area that Wenger has been looking at strengthening after a number of high-profile slip-ups this season which left the Gunners defence exposed and ultimately beaten.

Arsenal are now the top form club in the Premier League and look very likely to earn themselves another tilt at the Champions League next season, a major bargaining carrot for any player looking to prove themselves at the very top.

Ilkay Gundogan is also said to be wanted by both Manchester United and Barcelona but Arsenal are said to be the front-runners for the services of the Borussia Dortmund player.
