Arsenal ready to bail on midfield targets

News from the Emirates suggests that Wenger is ready to give up on attempting to secure the services of Sami Khedira and Lars Bender and instead place his faith in home grown talent. Reports in the Mirror suggest that Wenger has put his trust in Jack Wilshere taking on the anchorman role in the Arsenal midfield. The manager will stick with that plan unless something remarkable happens with the ongoing negotiations with Khedira and Lars Bender.

The Gunners boss has had a frustrating time with securing either Khedira or Bender and is reported to believe he has enough midfield options and will simply groom Wilshere in the deeper-lying anchorman role. There are those that would doubt Wilshere was capable of playing that role but it could also prove useful for England if he can. Wilshere hasn’t secured a regular place for his country and after the departure of Steven Gerrard, Wilshere could find a vacant position to make his own.

Another midfielder would provide greater competition for a first-team place but it seems that Wenger is also reluctant to go down the route of pushing the wage bill up and making the club unsustainable in its finances hence the Khedira deal, whilst seemingly having the inter-club go-ahead has struggled to find an accord with personal terms.

Wenger has of course already got riches in the midfield department with Ramsey, Rosicky, Ozil, Oxlade-Chamberlain and Diaby ready to start the new Premier League season and while they are in the market for another striker they are unlikely to plump for another marquee signing like £32million Sanchez.
