Arsenal make fresh enquiry for William Carvalho

The Sporting Lisbon defensive midfielder has been the subject of fresh enquiries from Arsene Wenger who is said to be interested in his services over that of other options, including Khedira according to the Independent.

The player has an astonishingly large release clause of £35million at his present club Sporting Lisbon. This may well provide an insurmountable obstacle to any deal being completed and the player is contracted until 2018. Carvalho has been a long-term target of Manchester United but it now seems that Arsenal are seriously looking at the player as an option.

According to the Mirror Arsenal have been told they will need to spend £24million up front for the midfielder but Arsenal have played down claims of an existing bid with staggered payments says the report.

Carvalho is a product of Sporting Lisbon, having developed through their youth system but has been on load at Brugge from 2012-2013 whilst becoming a Portugese international in 2013. Carvalho has made 48 Appearances for the Belgium outfit Brugge, playing alongside other Lisbon players in the same situation.

The 22-year-old was eligible for Angola where he was born and Portugal but chose to play for Portugal, where he has played from U17 level to the senior squad. Wenger is known to be a big admirer of the player who played at this Summer’s World Cup and the report in the Mirror suggests that the player is the clubs priority signing following the breakdown in negotiations to secure Sami Khedira.
