Arsenal: A Reversal of Trend and Fortunes?

24 June 2013 10:23

Years of trophy-less drought has resulted in a trend of exodus at Arsenal which has seen players like Robin van Persie and Cesc Fabregas – who were the very heart and soul of the stuttering team, depart to greener pastures for the ultimate reason – promise of silverware. As Arsenal struggled to pip Tottenham last season to the final Champions League spot, the beginning of an end to their woes seems to have taken life towards the end of the season as Arsene Wenger’s rejuvenation of his seemingly green and soft team led them to a glorious exit from the Champions League, with heads held high after their unprecedented shut out of Bayern at the Allianz – the first and last time it had been accomplished in the last season – and to a one point lead in the standings at the end of the last weekend of the Premier League 2012-13 season.

Arsenal’s revival has given roots to the reversal of the very trend (departure of established stars) which has infuriated most of their fan base as marquee player transfer speculations, lucrative sponsorship deals and (supposedly) a £70 million war chest aim to stem the club’s failures. With Gonzalo Higuain about to be unveiled as the newest Gunner family member and the (hopefully true) rumours of Fellaini and Rooney being pursued, the club seems to be headed for a major revamp to their fortunes of late – all noise but little substance.

This season might finally shower some much-awaited success on the Gunners, thus putting to rest the agony endured season after season, and lifting the club off the shadow of success during Henry’s time in London. Trophies might also breed a culture of winning at the club which has a great core of young players and bring back the deserving laurels to Arsene Wenger – the man who, all these years, has stood tall and endured criticism like a genial father to agitated youngsters.

The official announcement of Higuain’s arrival at the club could be the trigger to reignite lost glory. Only time will tell if dreams come true, and with the shackles of financial dearth finally threatening to break free, the Gunner fans can hardly wait for the ascent to glory.
