Portsmouth sink Wimbledon to secure second win

Goals either side of half-time from Brett Pitman and Conor Chaplin earned Portsmouth a first win since the opening day of the season as they dispatched AFC Wimbledon 2-0 at the Cherry Red Records Stadium.

Experienced striker Pitman slotted home from the penalty spot after being hauled down by Wimbledon captain Barry Fuller before Chaplin capitalised on a defensive mix-up.

Both sides struggled to break down the other in a lacklustre first half, although the action finally took off when Fuller knocked Pitman to the ground in the 38th minute and the Pompey skipper made no mistake from 12 yards.

Following the goal, the action intensified as a touchline scramble led to Dons defender Callum Kennedy being carried off on a stretcher.

Pompey were quick out of the gates after the break and took just five minutes to double their lead with substitute Chaplin sliding the ball home after a mistake from Anthony Hartigan.

The visitors almost scored a third from a Pitman free-kick but his 68th-minute strike was met with a great save from George Long.
