A case for the defence - Manchester United (The season so far)

Despite what all the doom-mongers are suggesting about their current campaign so far, Louis Van Gaal’s 'galacticos' at Manchester United have many a reason to be cheerful.

Looking forward, recent results are proving that their form (if not wholly convincing) is shaping up for a much improved style of play, not least, in terms of tactical cohesiveness.

Bearing in mind that the squad has been shorn of at least nine first teamers dating back before the seasons 2-1 curtain raiser against Swansea at Old Trafford, united fans can be highly optimistic of a much required Champions League finish come May 2015.

The new united manager has often stated his desire to quickly integrate his latest high profile charges with his much vaulted ‘philosophy’. With so many new faces and a complete turn around in formation, time is what Van Gaal will cherish most of all – perhaps more than the signing of another two world class defenders. Both of which he must surely acquire in the next January transfer window.

On the plus side, the goals appear to be flying in. Angel Di Maria is slowly becoming the next darling of M16 with his ‘CR7’ like performances and ability to get a sombre crowd on its feet with one piece of delightful audacity. Red Devils supporters love nothing better than a player who is both creative and wears the shirt with pride by leaving nothing of himself in the changing room.

Add to that, the addition of potential goal machine Radamel Falcao, the calm and visionary Daley Blind in defensive midfield, plus the equally exciting Ander Herrera and England new boy Luke Shaw – it would be easy to claim that United will only fall short this season to the financial big guns of Chelsea and Manchester City.

It’s a good job I’m not a betting man, because maybe, just maybe, they may surprise us all by exceeding even those expectations…
