Roy Hodgson wants to continue as England manager until after the 2018 World Cup finals in Russia, according to reports.
The 67-year-old's current contract expires after next year's European Championships in France but he is understood to be keen to retain his role as head coach for another two years.
A number of national newspapers were claiming on Friday morning that the Football Association is aware of Hodgson's wishes and will ultimately make the final decision concerning his future.
The FA is, however, yet to announce a new chief executive following the departure of Alex Horne in January and the governing body is unlikely to settle on a plan for life after Hodgson until it has done so.
The fact Hodgson will join an FA delegation at the preliminary 2018 World Cup draw in St Petersburg on July 25, when all confederations barring Asia will have their qualifying draws, could further fuel speculation - but it is hardly unheard of for an outgoing coach to attend such official events.
Following his succession of Fabio Capello in May 2012, the former Liverpool and West Brom boss has guided England to the quarter-finals of Euro 2012 and oversaw a group-stage exit from last year's World Cup in Brazil.
He has won 21, drawn 11 and lost five of his 37 internationals and the Three Lions are currently well-placed to qualify for the Euros after winning all four of their opening matches in Group E.
Reports suggest England Under-21 boss Gareth Southgate is in consideration for the top job should Hodgson depart in 2016 although the former Aston Villa defender could well succeed the current head coach two years later.
