Sport.co.uk was kindly invited to the launch of the new Urban Golf on Kensington High Street. Never one to turn down a sport related event, we sauntered on down expecting little more than a few drinks and a bash on their state of the art golf simulators.

We quickly found ourselves shooting six under par on the back nine of St Andrews, and high fiving my media team colleagues which included actor Dougray Scott, of Mission Impossible II and Desperate Housewives. The free beers were flowing and the high fives were echoing round the room; we were quickly three under through three holes. Now, we must be truthful, none of us were scratch golfers, but we were playing Texas scramble. A form of the game where each team player tees off and you pick the best ball and carry on from there.

This is not to undermine our miraculous achievement, and yes, we would have broken the Old Course’s record had we played eighteen, but it was a real team effort, with each of us pitching in when needed. We ended up carding seven birdies, a par and just a solitary bogey. Perhaps St Andrews is a little easier without wind and rain? I’d like to think it was just a difficult in a comfy, warm, relaxed bar. Hmm.

Sport.co.uk were playing in the Media Team with fellow journalists, and you’ll be happy to know we took to the cleaners the teams of Sony and Universal among others. Our closest rivals finished a pitiful one under par. Pathetic.

All jests aside, it was a terrific night enjoyed by all, and it is highly recommendable for anyone looking for a fun night out with a twist. Somewhat surprisingly, there were plenty of people there who were not golf enthusiasts, but with live music, plenty of bar space and cosy furniture, the golf does not have to take centre stage. Those who don’t play are also welcomed to release their inhibitions and have a good old swish at the screen. There are also 52 world renowned courses to choose from, so a unique challenge is always provided. I can’t promise there will be any Hollywood stars around though, but you never know...

All in all, a thoroughly pleasurable night, enjoyed by all. Especially those who won. Get yourself down there…

URBAN GOLF - The state of the art Kensington venue joins the Soho branch, which was started in 2004 followed by Smithfield in 2006 and as the third in the already hugely successful chain of golf simulators. To book go to URBAN GOLF
