Whyte Wins UK BMC National Series Opener

Kyle Whyte won the men’s Superclass race as the HSBC UK/British Cycling BMX Series National Series got underway in Manchester.

Whyte beat his brother Tre, Billy Luckhurst and Ross Cullen to win the final and said to British Cycling: "That was an awesome final and topped a fantastic weekend. Yesterday in round one I got first in the Superclass and then second overall in the junior men, so that was pretty decent.

“Then today I made the Superclass and junior finals and just won the Superclass again, just edging my brother to the line. Billy and Ross were pretty tough competition and obviously my brother was too.”

Tre Whyte said: “My brother is in the junior class and I’m in the elite class. He races really well, but there are not many chances that we can race against each other without a lot of fast people in the background, so he was just chasing me down and got me.

“He’ll probably never let me forget that he beat me here, but that’s okay as I’ll get him next time.”

Blaine Ridge-Davis won the Women's Championship class race and said: "I’ve been training all winter for this and I’ve had it at the back of my mind to do really well, especially in Manchester as I train here quite a lot.

“I’ve been training really hard with Bethany Schriever who got third today. So I’m over the moon to win back to back this weekend. I didn’t really expect it but you’ve got to aim high.

“I changed my tactics this year by starting to really think about myself rather than what the others are doing around me and that’s really paid off as I performed a lot better.

“Words can’t describe how I feel right at this moment. I really looking forward to the next round in Birmingham and see what I can do there.”

The opening rounds have been shown on the Bike Channel and will be repeated this week.

The rest of the rounds are:

22-23 April: Rounds three and four

10-11 June: Rounds seven and eight
