Nibali has now won all three Grand Tours and said: "I have never thought about the records of the history. I have conquered each of the Grand Tours step by step and to be made the winner of a race I have always watched is incredible.

"I would have found it harder if Froome and Contador was in the race but I have prepared well and I showed it on the mountains. Every finish I was there. Froome and Contador are great champions and I look forward to racing them again.

"we have not really realised what we have done but this is a special day and I hope to remember with a huge amount of affection."
