Bjorn Leukemans of Wanty Group has won the Grote Prijs Jef Scherens.

This annual 1.1 race on the UCI European Tour is named after seven times professional sprint champion Jef Scherens and takes place in Leuven in Belgium over 13 laps of 14.1kms to make up 183.3kms in total.

Sixteen riders got away early before being joined by three more to make a 19 strong group which included Kenny Dehaes won the recent GP Zottegem, which was a few seconds clear of a chasing group of another sixteen riders, who soon joined them to form a thirty five man break.

The break stretched to forty riders which had a lead of 1.50 before there was a split and Leukemans, Marcato, Van Aert, Breen, McNally and Korevaar escaped the shackles and took a fifty second lead over the first chasing group and 2.20 over the peloton with 85kms left.

The front group reduced to four with Leukemans, Marcato, Van Aert and British rider Mark McNally, who were ahead of a chasing group by forty seconds and 2.38 over the peloton with twenty five kilometres left.

Bjorn Leukemans went on the attack and stayed away to take the victory.
