Geraint Thomas Wins The Tour Of The Alps

Geraint Thomas of Team Sky has won the Tour Of The Alps race.

With Geraint Thomas in the leader’s jersey, the fifth and final stage saw 128 rider’s starting on 192km stage from Smaranoto to Trento.

Ian Boswell was forced to abandon early after crashing on a stage which saw six riders in the break in Frankiny, Barta, Bongiorno and Bisolti with Roy and Totò on the front.
After forty kilometres, the group which now include Chernetski, Morabito and Gavazzi, had a lead of two minutes which went out to four minutes as Bongiorno was first over the Passo Durone climb.

The break went out to 5.30 as Gavazzi took the sprint after 110kms.

Team Sky had had enough and worked to bring the gap crashing down. With 52kms left. Geraint Thomas joined those on the front as part of a group of twenty riders. 

Bernal briefly led but Thomas and his group got back up to him with 21kms to go.
Torres and Tolland attacked six kilometres later but that was brought back and Thomas, Pinot,Scarponi and Pozzovivo led going into the final five kilometres.

Nine riders joined them three kilometres later but it was Thibaut Pinot of FDJ who took the win ahead of Rohan Dennis and Geraint Thomas who took the overall victory.
