Alex Dowsett has said that no-one will be able to take away his name from from the long list of heroes after he smashed the World Hour Record in Manchester.

The Essex man beat Rohan Dennis's distance of 52.491 kilometres by setting a distance of 52.937km after getting stronger in the second half of the race and said: "The first thirty minute was easier than I expected. I got on the bike and made some modifications so that it only lasted an hour. This is the first time I have run it at high temperature and I knew it was going to be easy early on. The last ten minutes were a bit grippy.

"I would like another crack at it later in the year. When the UCI changed the rules I thought I would have a punt at it and suddenly I realised what I had let myself in for.

"i want to say thank you to the crowd for the last five minutes as I was listening to you.

"The coaches gave me a plan which I did not like much but I knew I had a lot left in the tank and went for it"
