According to Danish TV channel TV2, Denmark has put up 90m kroner (£8.5km) to stage the opening three stages of the 2018 Tour De France.

Denmark staged the start of the Giro D'Italia in 2012 and the World Championship in 2011 which saw the Elite Mens Race being won by Mark Cavendish.

If they were awarded the Grand Depart, the opening stage would be a prologue in Copenhagen with stage two from Roskilde to Odense and stage three from Vejle to Sønderberg.

According to TV2, Tour de France race director Christian Prudhomme will meet Denmark's prime minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen next month and that if their bid for 2018 is not successful, the money will be forwarded to allow a bid for the 2019 and 2020 editions.
