Dan Martin Wins Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana Stage 2

Dan Martin of Etixx Quick Step, took the win on the second stage of the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana 2016.

Stage two saw the riders with Team Sky's Wout Poels in all the major jersies, take on a 163.3km stage from Castellon to Fredes (Pobla de Benifassa.

A five man group of Anton Vorobyev of Katusha, Paulo Torres, Artes Bagues, Federico Burchio and Fabio Chinello got clear and were five minutes ahead.

The gap dropped to around two minutes when Chinello took the sprint after Burchio had taken the second climb.

Nicholas Roche and Alex Peters were on the front for Team Sky trying to bring the escapers back who were 2.35 ahead with 37kms left.

On to the final climb which was fifteen kilometres long and had ramps of ten per cent, Torres attacked the escapers who were caught with twelve kilometres left.

Imanol Estevez and Sonny Colbrelli of Bardiani-CSF, took over before Estevez shed him and tried to stay clear with eight kilometres left.

A kilometre later and Jose Herrada of Movistar attacked and went clear. He kept looking round but no-one was with him.

Herrada went under the flam rouge as Team Sky and the peloton closed in.

Dan Martin jumped over and showed his strength. He was clear with 400ms to go and down the slope, the Birmingham born Irishman, went to take the win in 4.00.05 ahead of Jesus Herrada and Wout Poels, who keeps his leader's jersey with a thirteen second lead over Luis Sanchez.
