Katusha's Giampaulo Caruso has won the annual Milan-Torino race.
This traditional warm up to the Tour Of Lombardy attracted ten World Tour teams and also included Vuelta a Espana winner Alberto Contador.
The first break of the day did not come until 42kms into this 193.5m into a race and saw Jerome Pineau (IAM Cycling), Lorenzo Rota (MG KVis Wilier), Nicola Dal Santo (Nankang Fondriest) and Gianluca Leonardi (Area Zero) take a five minute lead.
With Tinkoff Saxo working hard on the front, the gap fell steadily and was down to 1.30 as the riders started on the first crossing of the Superga climb.
Having mopped up the escapers, a group of fifty riders set the pace before Team Sky's Dario Cataldo who is joining Astana, attacked with Julian Arredondo (Trek), Alberto Losada (Katusha) and Diego Rosa (Androni Venezuela).
The peloton were soon after them and only Rosa was left clear before the riders started on the second and last Superga climb with just over five kilometres to go
Katusha sent a man up the road in Sergei Chernetski, leading the way for Giampaulo Caruso to follow with Rinaldo Nocentini of AG2R and Frank Schleck (Trek Factory Racing).
They caught Chernetski and had a lead of fifteen seconds going under the flam rouge. Alberto Contador and company tried to close in but Caruso was away and took the victory in 4.30.12, some three seconds ahead of Nocentini and nine seconds ahead of team Daniel Moreno, followed by Aru, Rodriquez and Contador.
